The AI4PEOPLE SUMMIT 2025: HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE OPENING SESSION

Organized by the AI4People Institute with Atomium, the European Institute for Science and Democracy, it built on the Paris AI Action Summit to bring together policymakers, researchers, industry and civil society to turn ethical AI principles into practical governance.

We heard from ???????? ??????? (Member of the European Parliament), ???????? ?????? (Professor of Computer Science at Umea University), ?????? ????? (Director, AI Office and Director-designate for Enabling and Emerging Technologies), ???? ????? ???? (Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southampton), ?????? ????????? (CEO Fujitsu Research of Europe) and ???????????? ???????? (President, AI4People Institute), each bringing a unique perspective on where AI governance stands and where it must go next.
A clear thread across interventions was that ?????????? ?? ???? ??? ???????? ?????: ??????????? ?? ????? ??????????, ????????? ??????? ?????????? ??? ???? ??????????? ?????, ??? ???? ???-???????.
From the EU perspective, MEP Vigenin emphasized the AI Act as a key foundation, but stressed that ?????????? ????? ???’? ??????? ??????????? ?? ??????? ????????? ????????????? ?????? ????????????, ????????, ????????, ????????? ??????, ??? ????? ???????. This is especially the case for general purpose and high-risk systems where transparency, accountability, bias safeguards, and human oversight are crucial.
????. ?????? ????????? ??? ???????????? ?? ????????? ?? ???? ?? ???????? ????? ??????? ????? ????, ?????, ??? ??????????, ?? ????????? ?? ?????????? ????? ????????? ?????????. She also warned about the “efficiency narrative” surrounding generative AI: when speed and convenience replace critical thinking, we risk weakening shared reality and democratic trust, since these systems can produce content that sounds right without being true.

He emphasised that ethical principles must be backed by real technology, presenting Fujitsu’s work on fairness verification (including intersectional bias detection), anti-disinformation systems, explainable and neurosymbolic AI, risk-scanning tools for generative models, and energy-efficient AI hardware.
