Agenda

THREE YEAR OVERVIEW

Agenda

‣ November 2017 - definition of working agenda
A working agenda for the Forum will developed, leading to a white paper on how to design policies favourable to the development of a ‘good AI society’ by Atomium’s team under the direction of Professor Luciano Floridi.

‣ 20 February 2018 - kick-off in Brussels
The working agenda of the initiative will be presented and the foundations of the white paper formally laid out. Participants will have 60 days to formally join the AI4People forum. Atomium will also devise a plan of collaboration, map the AI landscape, and develop a public consultation and media communication strategy.

‣ June 2018 - members’ Meeting in Oxford
The final version of the white paper will be presented at the European Parliament and revised, leading up to publication at the beginning of June to collect feedback in preparation for the Summit.

‣ October 2018 - AI Summit in Brussels
Partners, civil society organisations and interested parties will convene at a public meeting at the European Parliament to discuss how to design policies to leverage the power of AI for society. This will support the first draft of a proposal for ethical guidelines for AI, containing core principles that the development of AI should follow.

Agenda

‣ November 2018 - public consultation on guidelines
AI4P will launch a Europe-wide public consultation on the first set of principles developed by the Forum, supported by a media campaign to gather feedback and support among citizens.

‣ February 2019 - from principles to practice
The Forum will work out a plan detailing how the general ethical principles of AI should be applied in practice, using current examples of AI-powered technologies and services. This may include identifying specific principles for different sectors of society, and special focus will be dedicated to the most vulnerable groups.

‣ June 2019 - from Forum to Committee
The second white paper will be published, summarising the evolution from principles to guidelines, and outlining the next steps necessary for a ‘good AI society’. Preparation for the third year will begin, including the development of a plan to transform the Forum into a permanent Committee for a Good AI Society.

‣ October 2019 - second Summit and Committee launch
The Committee for a Good AI Society, to be convened at the 2019 Summit, will be a permanent body comprised of experts, civil society representatives and industry partners. As an independent and not-for-profit body, it’s function will be advisory and consultative, and its mission to support and inform policy makers on the evolution of AI and its impact.

Agenda

‣ November 2019 - developing a Corporate Charter
Work begins on the development of a charter of ethical principles for tech companies. This charter will be derived from the principles and guidelines of earlier white papers, but will relate specifically to corporations dealing with AI in commercial contexts.

‣ February 2020 - from practices to policy
Building on the work of the Forum turning principles into practice, the newly formed Committee for a Good AI Society will undertake policy analysis to decide how best to adapt law, standards and regulation to the new capacities, practices and behaviours enabled by AI. This may include case studies and testimony in areas such as algorithmic transparency.

‣ June 2020 - launch of the AI Kitemark Program
Drawing on the Corporate Charter, the Committee will pilot the launch of the AI Kitemark, an EU-wide symbol certifying ethically sound uses of AI. The Kitemark could be awarded in different contexts, including to companies who have signed the Corporate Charter; to specific products or services which adhere to guidelines for good AI; and even to AI designers and engineers who complete a tailored program of study.

‣ October 2020 - closing Summit
The final Summit will showcase the Committee’s first full year of work, and provide a formal opportunity for the Committee to be made permanent. The Summit will highlight the three major work streams from the Committee’s first year, detailed above.
